Mobile shopping helped eBay through the Christmas Period as many people turned to its
marketplace to secure all manner of Christmas presents. The surge in mobile shopping
helpd eBay beat analysts expectations with an 18% boost in revenue compared to the
same period in 2011.
For the year 2012 eBay mobile sales doubled to $13bn compared to 2011. Paying via a
mobile device beat that that when PayPal's payment volume tripled to $14bn.
Whilst eBay is one of the largest marketplaces in the world it was initially slow to take
advantage of the possibilities that mobile shopping offered. However under the direction of
CEO John Donahoe, eBay invested to improve and upgrade the buying experience of both
mobile & web shoppers.
In addition it now offers a range of eBay Mobile Apps that
work with the iPhone, iPad, Android, Blackberry and Windows Phone.
“Mobile continues to rewrite the commerce playbook,” said Donahoe
after the latest results were revealed.
